ZX Spectrum Dizzy sprite rips

Post by Nootrac4571 » Tue Jun 27, 2017 8:58 pm

[Please let me know if this is the wrong place for this, or if such an image-heavy post is a faux-pas, and I will apologise and rectify it!]

Hello Dizzy fans!

I just downloaded DizzyAGE and had a bit of a play around - it's great, hooray! Whoever collected all the images for the standard tile sheets did an excellent job, but I couldn't help noticing that there are a few things missing, and a few graphics which aren't *quite* the same as in the original games.

So in the interest of pedantic completeness, I wrote a few scripts and ripped out all the sprites from .tap files of the original ZX Spectrum games. I thought maybe some of you might be interested in the end result?

I'm pretty sure that this is every single in-game sprite from all the main-series ZX Spectrum games, exactly as they originally appeared:

A few notes:

Some animations (The water in Dizzy 2-6, the machine in Dizzy 3.5, and a bunch of Dizzy 5 animations) are stored not as individual sprites, but as a single "start" sprite, then a series of difference maps which are drawn over the top of the previous one to produce animation. Presumably this was easier or quicker for the Spectrum to render. The difference maps are incomprehensible to human eyes so I've composited them in the above images.

Dizzy 1: Has a few unused sprites: The third "tree branches" sprite is never used in the game, and as far as I can tell the two tiny 8x8 pixel sprites immediately after the mine cart aren't either.

Dizzy 2: This game introduces the standard Dizzy font, but it's slightly different from all the later incarnations: The "Z" is thinner, and most of the punctuation is slightly different.

Dizzy 3.5: As far as I can tell, the sprite of Danny lying on his back is never used.

Dizzy 5: The sprites might seem somewhat haphazardly arranged, but the reason is this: The first half are all the sprites that are in the 48k version of the game. The second half is the sprites that are unique to the 128k version. Although there are actually a few sprites (Theo holding his wand out, and the twisty seaweed/coral) which actually only appear in the 48k version.

Dizzy 7: This game uses a completely different rendering engine to the previous ones, abandoning the sprites in favour of a fixed square tilemap with baked in colours.

Welcome, Nootrac. :)

Thank you for sharing these sprite sheets. They will certainly come in useful down the line as DizzyAGE is missing some of these graphics. :)

Thanks, Nootrac4571. Nice job.
Can you rip tiles from Dizzy games from others platform? Amiga, NES, etc.
In particular, player sprites from Spellbound Dizzy on Amiga?
