Who still has working 8-bit/16-bit computers?

I'm guessing most regular viewers of the forum did at one point have a Spectrum, a C64, Amstrad, Amiga or Atari ST (except a few that know Dizzy from his console games), so I was wondering, how many people still own (and at least occasionally use) an old computer like the ones I mentioned? Or have emulators made messing around with dusty old tapes and disks etc unnecessary/undesirable?

Well i still own my old speccy +3, Atari ST and Sega Mega Drive.

Personally i would rather play the old games on the original computer than though an emulator {yolkfolk}:delight:

Ah, the dusty old Amiga 500, no idea if it still works, but it's in the basement, along with a probably now equally dusty Sega Mega Drive, with about 100 games! Much better to play the Sega then the emulator, although it doesn't make too much difference with the Amiga, seeing as that was just a basic PC

I also think it's more fun to play the games on the real machines. I've had a C64 since about 1990, although it got replaced twice under guarantee. I never had a Spectrum or an Amiga while they were still in the market, but I got both about 4 or 5 years ago from eBay (a Spectrum 128 and an Amiga 1200). I've never had an Amstrad CPC, I'd probably get one of those too if they weren't so bulky :lol:

I've got an Electron (A cut down version of the Acorn BBC) but it's got a long list of faults. Also no Dizzy games, though with 32k (including video memory) I don't think any Dizzy would have fitted onto it.

I still have my Spectrums, the C64 and my Sega MegaDrives.

My Sega Megadrive/Mega CD thing is the only ones that work now.

I have a Commodore 64 (which has died sadly) but my Master System, Mega Drive and Gameboy still work :tup:

My Amiga still works, and virtually all the software for it is still in working order as well. One or two are a bit dodgy, but after 17 years you can't expect everything to work!

Still got my two 64's, a C128, Mega Drive II, Master System II, Game Gear, NES, Spectrum 128 +2 and Super TV boy. They all work fine as far as I am aware, I give them a clean up every few months and play on my 64 and Mega Drive quite a lot.

Emulators are okay as long as you can get one with a frame-rate auto switcher to avoid the jumping from a perfect 50fps, and of course a joypad. For those of you hwo own Xbox 360's, I heartily recommend the Wireless Adapter - It's £14.99 (cheaper than a good analogue rumble pad) and you just lug it into your USB socket. It works same as the binding button on your Xbox, allowing you to connect up to four wireless pads to your PC for less than fifteen quid! We tried it recently with Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96 on the Mega Drive Fusion emulator and it works a treat. The 360 pad design is perfect too, so you save your self megabucks by getting one of these things. (ever tried playing Street Fighter II in MAME with the keyboard!?)

The only old computer that I have and is still working nice is my good, old Commodore 64 :smile: Although its cassette device is breaking down constantly (which is not weird for me), I enjoy playing games on it. {yolkfolk}:delight:

In past, I had also Atari 65XE, but it broke down.. What a pity! :cry:

Well, I have a VIC 20.. the moniter is burnt out entirely. So... doesn't really work, but I habe one of those.. TRS 80s? I think they were called... Anyway, thats an interesting machine, the games were fairly basic, but I had a car game on there, it was alot like the lotus series for Atari ST, except it came with the computer... can't remember the name of the game... But it had a game where you could get the computer to talk, when I was young it was pretty exciting to get the computer to talk to you hahah {yolkfolk}:tongue:

my C64 was still working a few years ago when i pulled it out at Christmas.. (its just what you when your already in the attic finding those dam Christmas trees and junk)

But instead i bought Bubble Bobble for the pc and complete that every Christmas.. Be great if they did that for a few other classic games, theses emulators ain't always usable.

but the other best ones were Gothik, Ghostbusters and Trapdoor, and Bubble Bobble.. not forgetting Dizzy.. which was probably the first game i really played (maybe it was Second to Ghostbusters)

I have a VIC20 and TRS 80 working, and I also have an old DOS system, if that counts.

I still have a Mega Drive, we not long ago binned our old 486, 16meg of ram. 500 meg hard drive, sheer power!
The scary thing is.. I'm sure the XZ81 i built from a kit is still at my mum's.. Christ i feel old :cry: you can still get them in kit form if you look on the net, dunno why anyone would by one though

my first glimpse at Dizzy was on the Armstrad (i think)

Last time I checked my Commodore 64 was still working...
Although I've not played it in awhile now, not since I started playing my Dizzy games on my PC anyway. {yolkfolk}:delight:

My Commodore cassettes on the other hand...
The majority still work I believe, however occassionally I get the odd surprise when one suddenly decides it's too old and used... And gives up on me! :cry:

I had a similar experience with Commodore 64 cassettes.

I had between 20 and 30 games for my C64 at one point, but by the time I got rid of it I was down to just 1 that worked! :sad:

i remember having loads of games not sure how i got them. and a few seemed to be copys.. must have bought one big box off someone i dunno.. but i noticed all the games that look good and interesting never pissing worked.. lol i even bought one of those box sets with 100 off games over 5/6 tapes and you either had to load them up one at a time to get to the game you want or do it once and take not of the number so you could fast forward it to that spot.. but again the good ones never really worked.. :tongue:

I even had one cartridge for it.. which didn't seem to do much, think it some kind of word program on it... weird.

I still have the C64 from 1986 and an Amiga 1200 from 1992 with kickstart 3.0 although that is a 32 bit machine. At one time I thought my 64 had died a few years ago, turned out it was just the fuse on the MB had blown {yolkfolk}:delight: . As for the 1200 I have been attacking it with a screw driver, adding things, taking things out and its still working :teethy:
