right, i've decided to make some videos setting out the basics of using DizzyAGE to make a game.
I'm not sure how many videos there will be, but there will be enough to walk people through how to use the editor, place brushes and objects, use items to open doors etc, and give items to - and interact with - other characters.
The first video gives a (very) brief overview of how to use the editor. I didn't use a script, and i just went with the flow, so the audio quality may not be that good!
All right Jamie, you really made me happy! {yolkfolk} I new the day will come when I have to edit the "video" page: https://www.yolkfolk.com/dizzyage/articles_video.html (I hope my litte javascript code works for everybody).
a real inspiration to anyone who dreams of being able to produce their own game.
Looks to be very thorough too - i wonder are there more tutorials planned and if so - can we see one about how to write scripts and link scipts in with maps?
Again, nice one Jamie, you're a real credit to this community

unfortunately the video is in the wrong place in Opera Browser (the one i use).
and yes i am planning on making more. There will be another one to go through a few more elements of the map editor, one to explain how to code to open doors / remove blocking scenery (e.g. walls, rocks etc), and another one to explain how to interact with characters and gain items. (these last two will explain how to tie the code in with the objects in the map)
Thre will probably be more too, it just depends if i think of anything else.
The second video details a few more map editor functions, explains the (basic) differences between static and dynamic brushes, and shows how to set a coin object in the landscape.
great great job Jamie {yolkfolk} Ive been longing for this i have 2 games mapped out but just cant work out the code {yolkfolk} so with your help may be they will get finished . i was starting to worry as some one on here has mentioned a good name for a game and this is the name of my first game that i started in 2007 so hope i get mine done before some one bets me to it {yolkfolk}:music: thanks again Jamie all the very best pamuch
the next tutorial will show how to code the game to get past blocking items such as doors, and the one after that will show how to interact with objects and characters.
i am doing my best to keep them each under 10 minutes long, but it's not easy!
Part 4 of the tutorial explains how to set items, objects, and brushes in the map, and shows how to code the game to produce a simple puzzle of getting past a static 'blocking' item such as a door.
Although i didn't go into too much detail, this one was still rather a long one, sorry!
Part 8 shows you how to set baddies in the map, get them to move, and kill the player. It also shows how to implement custom 'death' dialogues, and gives a small example of code optimisation as well.
this will be the last video, as there is now enough information in the 8 videos for people to make a simple game such as the original 'Diamond Mine Dizzy'. The total length of all the videos is just over 1 hour and 20 minutes. :teethy:
If anyone has any questions, or would like me to make a short tutorial about an aspect i may not have covered, then please let me know.
once i'd got the hang of doing it, it was fairly simple to note down a rough idea of what i wanted to cover in each tutorial, and spend 10 minutes doing each one.
Will there be a tutorial on how to add/create music/sfx and also how to make/import custom graphics for sceneray or characters that arent in the standard tile set?
Im surprised how much detail you can cover in just over an hour - it seems to be a lot quicker to learn how to use dizzyage from your tutorials than to play one of your games - hehe
