I thought it was "ta".
Just one of those semingly almost random ways of shortening things I suppose, like why is William shortened sometimes to Bill? Will I can understand, but where does the B come from?

It's probably an ancient corruption of the Norse "Takk", which is thankyou. The vowel sound is almost the same, and whilst the Vikings were raiding the north eastern shores of the British Isles, there was quite a lot of language exchange.

I'm not a linguistics expert, but my missus is Norwegian!
