Facing the inevitable
Hi everyone.

This update is a bit of a serious one, and in which we’re going to talk about that with eight days to go, Dizzy Returns in all likelihood won't meet its funding target.

As of today the total amount pledged stands at just over £23,000 of our £350,000 goal - in order to meet that we’d need over £40,000 pledged every day, and realistically that’s not going to happen. There’s certainly no shame in admitting that though, and we believe that rather than posting updates under the pretence that we might hit our target, it’s much better to be honest and upfront with you, our backers.

We’d also like to apologise for the radio silence over the last few days, and to those of you were expecting a big final push towards the finish line. As we're so far from our target we think that it’s better to acknowledge the situation, rather than to continue when the outcome has already pretty much been decided.

Lessons learnt
When we started the Dizzy Returns campaign we were in the pre-development stage, concepting characters, locations and game mechanics. Many of you have asked to see a demo or some gameplay footage – unfortunately that doesn't exist yet, because of the simple fact that we haven’t begun actually making the game. The majority of video game Kickstarter projects have been in production for some time, with some having been literally years in the making, and of course this wasn't the case with Dizzy Returns. As we have learnt all too well, starting the campaign this early in pre-development has made it much harder to communicate our vision of Dizzy Returns, and there’s no denying that we should and could have done this better.

The future of Dizzy Returns
As sad as it is to see that the campaign will unlikely be successful, the Dizzy Returns Kickstarter has done part of what it set out to do – gauge interest in the idea of a new Dizzy game. Our vision for Dizzy Returns was a very particular one; as has been proved by over 750 backers and all your comments and messages, there is indeed interest in a new Dizzy game, just maybe not at the size or scope of our original idea. There's certainly nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about not being successfully funded; on the contrary we're glad to have had this experience, and have learnt a great deal along the way.

As for the future of Dizzy, Dizzy Returns at least will not be made if the campaign is not funded successfully, as is looking likely. We may revisit the possibility of another Dizzy game at a later date, but the vision of that game would need to be considerably different.

Thank you
We’d like to say a sincere thank you to each and every one of you for your support and kind comments. It’s been heart-warming to see all the love for Dizzy that is still out there, and we’re humbled by the fond remembrances of your experiences with the original series of Dizzy games and the part they played in your lives. Regardless of whether we make a brand new Dizzy adventure or not, there’s no doubt that he has a place in gaming history.

So what's next?
We’ll be using time left of the campaign to share the rest of the concept work and designs we have with you, as well as asking for your thoughts about the future of Dizzy. As per Kickstarter's policy on unsuccessful projects, not meeting our target means that you will not be charged a penny.

Thank you once again to all of you - a Kickstarter project is nothing without its backers, and whilst we may not be near our funding target, we couldn't have asked for better supporters. As a small token of our thanks, we'll be putting together a collection of Dizzy Returns digital content, along with some as yet unseen concept art and mock-up pages from the art book, which we'll make available to you soon.

We may revisit the possibility of another Dizzy game at a later date, but the vision of that game would need to be considerably different.

This is...stupid. They want to forget about whole story they builded because of errors in marketing? {yolkfolk}
Asking such amount of money before christmas, in 28 days is pretty unlikely for Dizzy series.

^ yep.
The fact they had already spent time working it must mean they're at a financial loss now.
Maybe something will happen one day.

Oh well, there's a Blue Dizzy game in the works, lets all play that.

Personally, I think it was too much money as well as the wrong time. I know that Alex and all the excellent DizzyAge game makers do it for the love of Dizzy / programming / frustrating people!, but if one were to calculate how many hours it took to make the engine and then a game, and then pay a professional rate of pay for the hours involved, I doubt very much that it would cost anywhere near the £350K asked for. OK, the art is 'retro' on DizzyAge, but where is the problem with that?
So sad that the campaign has failed, but as I suspected, for many reasons it was inevitable without Meph winning the lottery. {yolkfolk}:guilty:

I always worried Dizzy Returns would just end up a Dizzy game by name only. Everything they wanted to do just wasn't Dizzy, but it's hard to judge something that was barely off the ground.

They can always make a classic style Dizzy game (with or without Dizzyage) it doesn't need to be 3D, zillions of rooms big, with speech (which has been done with Dizzyage if they wanted) sometimes limitations are a good thing.

Meph,

Obviously everyones got their own opinion as to how Dizzy should come back officially. With DizzyAGE, I am sure that many people have now assumed that this is a route to release a 'classic' Dizzy title.
I do agree limitations a good thing sometimes (I know all to well from fiddling with this site too much), but they have the tools and the skills to accomplish Dizzy how they envisioned it.

I would like to point out that the Olivers have always had a vision to make Dizzy bigger than its original form once he became an established character.
Even stating that films such as Shrek would be exactly how they would have wanted Dizzy portrayed.
The largely negative comments towards the Olivers on kickstarter and here arent really called for BUT they do admit the faults in planning the kickstarter at this time.

All this is a learning curve.
Dizzy WILL return. The vision and creativity behind the Olivers and Blitz is focused and nobody else besides the Olivers know Dizzy.

I'm sorry but there is NOTHING wrong in negative comments. Maybe there have been some offensive/nasty remarks on kickstarter i don't know, but negative ones should be welcomed, and nobody here is directing them at the Twins themselves, I'm certainly not!!!!

Theses days you have to like everything or someone calls you a troll, it's silly.

Fantastic Dizzy is a fine example of a Dizzy game gone wrong, in my opinion. And i thought Dizzy Returns they were being a bit to ambitious.. bigger doesn't always mean better than the thought of a tree house zillion times larger then the one on the old games is a bit of a worry.

I don't know what a Shrek is.

This seems to be the second time a new dizzy game has failed to be green lit.

The last update.

The End

Hi everyone,

Well, there you have it - the Dizzy Returns Kickstarter campaign is now at an end and sadly we haven't reached our funding goal.

As we mentioned in the update last week, development will no longer continue on Dizzy Returns. Sad as this is, we're very glad to have had this experience and we've certainly learnt a great deal over the past 30 days. Regardless of whether we make a new Dizzy adventure or not, there’s no doubt that he has a very fondly remembered place in gaming history.

We're also incredibly grateful for all the kind comments and support we've received from you all throughout the campaign and as promised, by way of a small token of our thanks, we have collated some exclusive digital content that we're making available only to our backers. Watch out for a backers-only update very shortly in which will explain exactly how you can get it.

Thank you once again to everyone who backed the campaign, and especially to those of you who took the time to share your views and opinions with us. Rest assured we are collating all your feedback and thoughts about the future of Dizzy, and now that the campaign is over you can email [email redacted] with any other comments or feedback you'd like to share with us.

We're heading off for the Christmas break now, and so we'd like to wish each and every one of you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

While it is a shame, I am not at all surprised. They were asking for far too much money and I didn't feel comfortable donating to something that potentially was mostly profit.

On the other hand, there are many people who produce Dizzy fan games for free, so its no major loss. Of course an official, professionally polished game would have been nice, but not at £350k.

I'd be interested to hear from all the hardcore Dizzy fans here what thoughts are on the apparent self-contained 'level' approach I inferred from the description of the Olivia's Cove area. To me it seemed like that quest was a little game area unto itself, like the levels of Crystal Kingdom Dizzy.

Did anyone else interpret this, or was I just misjudging the information? How many people would have liked the new game to be comprised of 'levels' connected to a hub area (Theo's Library, presumably)?

I only just found out about this today since I don't tend to pop in here regularly. I'm saddened I didn't get to hear about it early enough, and even sadder that even if I did make a contribution it wouldn't have been enough. It's a really sad realization that even with a community that remembers, loves, and would love for a new game to come back featuring Dizzy that there's a bigger world that never even heard of him and wouldn't care if he came back or not.
